AI Citation Testing FAQ Hub

Answers on AI citation and mention rates, test platforms, question variants, evidence retention, competitor comparisons, and retesting intervals.

How do you calculate the AI citation rate?

Define valid answers and the official domain scope first. Official-site citation rate is verified valid answers citing any URL on that site divided by all verified valid answers. Brand mention rate uses the same denominator and counts answers naming the brand, with or without citations. Count each answer once per metric; track mentions without citations as a separate subset. Exclude unresolved source URLs from the verified sample until checked, and report pending-review counts separately.

Is one test enough to assess results?

No. AI answers vary with the model, region, login status, and time. An illustrative pilot might use at least 20 questions and 60-80 tests, then adjust for coverage and variability. These are not universal standards or guarantees of statistical sufficiency. Retain evidence, test conditions, valid samples, and pending-review records.

Which AI platforms should be tested?

Consider ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the search and Q&A platforms used in the target market. Choose the actual platforms to match the client's market.

How should test questions be grouped?

Use at least four groups: verification of unique information, direct service queries, technical questions, and competitor comparisons. Include the original wording, synonymous variants, and long-tail questions in each group.

Does it count as success if an answer uses our reasoning without citing us?

It can inform an assessment of knowledge use, but must not count toward the explicit citation rate. Record similarities in answer structure, terminology, and factual sources separately.

What should we do about an incorrect AI citation?

Log the error in the assessment record, trace it to an SSOT field, page text, schema markup, or third-party source, then correct it and retest.

Can AI citation performance be assessed before a page is public?

No. External AI platforms cannot access a local preview address. Publish the page on the public web, allow crawling, and wait for indexing before running a formal assessment.

What citation rate should we aim for?

There is no universal pass threshold. Establish a baseline with a fixed question set and explicit definitions, then agree on stage-specific targets for the industry, site, content, and platforms tested. Report valid samples and changes across rounds. A target is neither an achieved result nor a performance guarantee.
